Swift Sail

Video: How to Get the Swift Sail

In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, a much faster Sail that automatically directs the wind (so you don't need to conduct it, ever) called the Swift Sail. The Swift Sail can be won at the Auction House for around 300 Rupees. It only becomes available after you complete the first dungeon, Dragon Roost Cavern.

Head back to Windfall and enter the Auction House on the right side of the main stairway leading up into the city -- the Auctions only take place at night, so you'll need to change the time of day by playing the Song of Passing. Don't have the Song of Passing? No problem, you can learn it from the man in Windfall on the top of the northwestern hill. He's dressed in disco frills -- show him the Wind Waker and he'll teach you the song.

In the Auction House, you may have to quit out and re-enter a few times to get the Swift Sail to appear. It appears at random along with a Heart Piece and a few other items.

To win the auction you can use a clever trick: Place a bid 10% higher than the current bid to freeze your opponents for 15 seconds. A good technique is to place a 10% higher bid (e.g. if the current bid is 110, add 10%, or 11 rupees for a bid of 121) at the 30 second mark, then wait for someone to get un-stunned. Mash the button to place another 10% increased bid around the 10 second mark. You will win the Swift Sail for about 200-300 Rupees. Hit A to activate it while sailing. It's amazing.

Get the Hurricane Spin

Collect or steal Knight's Crests from the armored Knuckle Knights. As soon as you have 10, go back to Outset Island and show them to Orca (the sword master). He will teach you the Hurricane Spin in return.

Get the Magic Shield

Complete Zunari's trading quest to get your hands on the Magic Shield item, which temporarily creates a protective force field around Link. To start the trading quest, talk to Zunari over the left counter. The complete trading quest can be found in the Windfall Island sidequests section.

Fairy Upgrades

There are eight different possible fairy encounters in Wind Waker -- and each leaves you with a very helpful upgrade.

There are six standard fairy wells. Depending on which one you visit at what time, your bombs or arrows will either be upgraded to 60 or 99 -- and your rupee carrying capacity will change first to 1,000, then to 5,000.

C-1: Northern Fairy Island

Additionally, there are two special fairies:

B-2: Mother & Child Isle Fairy
Requirement: Balled of Gales
Simply warp to this island with the Ballad of Gales and you will receive the Fire and Ice Arrow upgrades (once you have the Hero Bow, and have cleared the Forsaken Fortress a second time)
D-7: Two-Eye Reef Fairy / Big Octo
Requirement: Boomerang or Bombs
Look for the swarm of seagulls in the D-7 Two-Eye Reef quadrant and shoot the Octo's eyes to free this fairy. She will double your magic meter.

Korok Tree Spirit Quest

You've seen the withered trees on a few islands, but you don't know what to do? No problem, provided you have some Empty Bottles. Go to Forest Haven and scoop up some forest spring water with your Bottles. The contents of one Bottle can heal (multiple) withering plants, but its healing powers only last 20 minutes. Fill up a bottle and travel to the following locations:

B-1: Star Island
B-2: Child Isle (travel here from B-1 -- don't warp)
E-3: Eastern Fairy Isle
B-4: Greatfish Isle
A-5: Needle Rock Isle
E-5: Oasis
C-6: Shark Island
G-6: Cliff Plateau Isles (inside the mini-dungeon)

Heal all of the trees and you will receive a Piece of Heart in return.

Tingle Statues

Connect a GBA to the GameCube and play with a friend to discover secret Tingle statues inside each of the five main dungeons. The statue locations are marked as red question marks on your Tingle Tuner. Use a Tingle Bomb on the question mark to reveal them. Check the walkthrough (and maps) in this guide for exact locations.

You get rewarded for each statue on Tingle Island. They are worth 50 Rupees each. You can collect the money from one of the Tingle brothers on top of the tower.

When you collect them all, you will get a whopping 500 Rupees and hints on how to find a bottomless pot on Outset Island, so make sure that your wallet isn't full! To find this pot, which is on the "western tip" of the island, use Tingle's map to find the question mark and get your hands on 100 Rupees. You can return to this location whenever you need more cash and repeat this procedure. Note that you don't actually need to have found all statues to get the pot.

Messing with Tingle

Tingle is rather fond of his golden statues. Hit them with your sword while the GBA is connected and on and he will comment on your reckless behavior. Even better, take a statue and throw it into the sea. Doing any of this things will get Tingle so irate that he will drop bombs on you and scream in very large fonts. Also, if you come back later and talk to Knuckle, he will tell you that someone dropped the statues into the sea. But don't worry -- the statues will be back where they were.

Tingle's and Knuckle's Challenges

There are a few Tingle mini challenges in Wind Waker that you can only enjoy if you have a GBA connected to your GameCube. They are in the following locations:

Windfall Island: Complete Tingle's scavenger hunt to win 20 Rupees.
Windfall Island: Land on the school's awning to get a discount on Tingle's items.
Outset Island: Complete Knuckle's scavenger hunt to get the Hand-Me-Down Tingle Tuner.
Forsaken Fortress: Stand in the large pot in the room with all the Miniblins to get a discount on Tingle's Tings.
Tower of the Gods: Collect all five Pages of Legend to read about Tingle's background inside the tower's main hall.

The challenges are described within the walkthrough/sidequest text, so click on the links to learn more. Once you have finished Knuckle's challenge, he will appear in the flower patch on Tingle Island.

Hero's Charm

First, get the Cabana Deed from the school teacher (as described in the Windfall walkthrough). Then collect 40 Joy Pendants (on top of the 20 you gave to the teacher). You can steal Joy Pendants from Bokoblins, so be sure to visit the outlook platforms on the ocean. Visit the schoolhouse again and present her with them. If you have more than 40, she'll take those, too.

As a reward, you will receive the Hero's Charm. You can equip this mask from the stats screen that shows your weapon, songs, and Triforce pieces. While it's equipped, you can see your enemies' hit points.

General Mischief

When Pigs Attack: No, there are no chickens in this game. But that doesn't mean Wind Waker doesn't continue the "don't tease animals" theme. Try slashing at one of the little pigs on Windfall or Outset Island a few times, and you'll see what this all means…
Jar Breaker: On Outset Island, grab a jar and run over to the lady who's carrying a jar on her head. Throw the jar to break the one she's holding and she'll react to your mischief.

Fun with Time

There is a clock-specific Easter Egg in the game. If your GameCube's internal clock is set to daytime, the background on the save game selection screen will show a blue daytime sky. If it's night, the screen will show be a starry sky backdrop instead. To change your clock setting, hold A while powering up your GameCube and select the Calendar function.

Defeat Cannons Easily

You know that you can blow up wall mounted cannons with your ship's cannon or by throwing your Boomerang, but did you know that there's a far easier way to blow up the defenses of a lookout platform? Simply climb the ladder to reach the top of the platform, then lay bombs onto the platform, right above the cannons that are attached to the underside. The ensuing explosions will blow up the cannons quickly and safely.

Gallery Reward

The reward for getting all figurines in the Nintendo Gallery is… surprise, surprise: a figurine. You get a special Link and the King of Red Lions figurine once you have gotten all other figurines (except for the Knuckle one, that one isn't a requirement).

Second Quest

Once you finish the game, you will be asked if you want to save your status. Select a new save spot if you want to preserve your last save. If you start a new game with this save, the following things will have changed for your second quest:

You will start the game with the Deluxe Picto Box, so you can immediately start taking color photos (all the figurines you have gathered during the first quest will remain)
Your clothes won't change. Instead of the green tunic, your grandma gives you an invisible one -- so you can play through the game with Link's blue "crab" outfit.
Your sister Aryll will wear a "skull dress" instead of her usual outfit.
Hyrulian dialogue is translated. You will now be able to read everything characters like Jabun or Valoo say to you. (Link himself still won't understand it, though. Only the player will know what it says.)
The Treasure locations are moved further away from the islands.
